Edinburgh Defence Precinct, SA

DSTG

BELL was engaged to provide architecture and interior design services for the refurbishment of the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) training facility within the Edinburgh Defence Precinct, north of Adelaide.

Conceived as a contemporary learning hub, the facility was named Wardli, meaning Home in the Kaurna language, reflecting the intended character of the space as a welcoming environment for learning, collaboration and connection. The design centres around a new ground-floor pod structure inserted within the existing building, creating a defining architectural element that is visible from the surrounding mezzanine level.

The reconfigured facility brings together a diverse range of learning and workplace settings, including formal presentation areas, open-plan workspaces, hot desks, quiet zones, informal breakout areas and a library wall. These spaces support a variety of training, meeting and individual work activities, providing flexibility for evolving user needs.

Drawing inspiration from South Australia’s coastal landscapes, the interior design incorporates a palette of bronze and blue tones to create a cohesive and distinctive environment. The result is a contemporary workplace that balances focused learning, collaboration and opportunities for retreat.

Completed in early 2026, Wardli delivers a flexible, people-focused learning environment that supports DSTG’s ongoing training and professional development programs.
